How do you get pictures of you and your loved one together? It’s something I struggle with- and by that mainly I just mean I don’t get enough shots of us together. One thing I noticed is that I’m better about getting these type of shots when we’re on a trip. Here’s a few of my couple photography ideas and methods. . . and the perils of trying to get shots with a nut.

Couple Photography Ideas: Getting the Two of You Together

The Selfie?

So, of course, what some might consider to be the easiest way to get shots of the two you together these days is just to turn the camera around and take a selfie. Right?

It doesn’t work very well for me. Besides the fact that I take awful pictures of myself that way (I’ll spare you today), I have a nut for a husband.

This happens.

Time and Time and Time again. Seriously. I could have done a whole post with shots like this.

Of course, I keep snapping away.

I love that these shots are a snapshot of what life is like with this crazy nut. But, sometimes I wish I could just get a good shot of us together.

The thing about many of these shots is that they don’t give as much of a sense of place. They’re just portraits- there’s nothing wrong with that. . . but I miss the sense of something more in them.

The Timer (or Remote Control)

There are of course, tripods, places to set the camera, and game cameras that can aid in this process. But, don’t get me started about how much trouble it was to get this shot. (The nut was a hungry cranky nut at the time.)

This is a old game camera pic- and you can see that for posting here, I haven’t even cropped out the date (These days his came cameras would also tell you the moon phase and the temperature.)

The thing about backing away is that you can get a sense of place. A picture that really says I was here. (But still these shots are prone to my crazy husband’s antics.)

The Reflections

So, with that, I tend to resort to other methods- most often a lot sneakier methods.

Cody actually took the one below- I think he felt like it was payback (Honestly, I’d take it. . . and now with his good camera, he probably would have had a better shot.)

These usually give a great sense of place. Of course, they aren’t without their perils. . . This propeller gave us a funny warped look but this is still one of my favorite reflection shots. . . I’m not sure if it’s the full warp, the sun, or the fact that I’m hidden behind the camera.

But, I’ve shared this shot. . . it’s certainly not without its serious issues either! The nut didn’t even have to misbehave in this shot. From my eye level, we didn’t look too distorted but clearly with my camera on my lap we did. . .  and I didn’t have time before the streetcar arrived to adjust. You win some, you lose some.

Feet

It’s not wonder with all those perils, that I start to look down at our feet to get shots that say we were here together.

This one is really fun because it’s my feet but all of him. Maybe with a different lense I could have gotten a shot of more of my feet and more of the fountain, but it still tells the story- we were in the KC at the Country Club Plaza and a hunt for all the statues and landmarks (For some strange reason, I didn’t feel like shopping- I just wanted to walk around- so the brochure check list seemed fun. He did not get it.)

This one might not make sense to many of you. . . We’re “putting a bird to bed” at the deer lease- scouting for turkeys.

Shadows

And when I can’t get feet. . . there’s always our shadows too!

I’d love to here what methods do you resort to in order to get pictures of you and your significant other as a couple in the comments.
